Law and regulation has been enacted requiring corporations to report their carbon footprint (NGERs). There is also a requirement to report energy efficiency opportunities.
The first step is to understand these changes and
how climate change will effect your business.
The Australian Government's framework is developing but some aspects are law now.
The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (NGERs) requires a corporation to report on greenhouse gas emissions, where they come from and how much.
Using international carbon accounting standards, Carbon Managers will work with the Board to identify and account for the sources of the corporation (GHGs) emissions, establishing a baseline that will enable the Board to identify where to reduce emissions, thus helping the company shift to sustainable development practices.
Carbon Managers measurement and sustainability
strategy formulation and reporting service range includes:
1.1 Large Companies
Many large companies are already underway with their reporting processes. However, Directors may be concerned as to how advanced and accurate these activities are - whether the company is in compliance with the recently issued regulations and timeframes for the first reporting period.
Carbon Managers can provide a review of activities by way of gap analysis of different stages as follows:
1.2
Review of organisational structures to confirm "operational" control and definitions of "facility":
Carbon Managers will review and advise on contractual arrangements with smaller operations and suppliers to assess where the scope boundaries fall in respect of "operational control".
We will ensure the energy reporting team fully understand the requirements and have appropriate skills and capacity to obtain the appropriate data.
1.3
Carbon Managers will -
- Identify a reliable basis for targeting energy savings
- Identify historical invoices for energy, providing advice and analysis and implementing spreadsheets, documents and budgets.
- Analyse invoices for electricity, gas, and diesel etc contracts, verify accuracy, detect anomalies by division, region, group or manager.
- Identify need for immediate control and management.
- Communicate results, graphs, reports to support initiatives to drive awareness and change.
- Import into the Federal government's online calculator and reporting database.
1.4
Carbon Managers are trained to -
- Prompt energy efficiency targeting with measurable results.
- Assist to introduce targets, budgets, benchmarks and projectinitiatives and timelines into reporting process.
- Communicate results to drive transparency and commitment and in preparation for registration under the Regulations (due to befinalised in 2008/9).
1.5
Carbon Managers can then-
- Assist in the optimisation of all gains with reduced ongoing costs by introducing key performance indicators and start in depth analysis and data mine information for opportunities.
- Directly assist larger companies should the Board of Directors decide to develop a full sustainability
- Provide strategy and annual sustainability report
- Changing risk mitigation initiatives are encouraging these
2.1 Reducing energy use
Reducing energy use is an engineering process that looks at all manufacturing processes to utilise energy better. It may involve expenditure in, say, piping water to a furnace to create steam that then generates turbine driven electricity. Carbon Managerswill provide the advice on solar panels to reduce electricity use.
Carbon Managers will provide the advice and where necessary, the funding for such remediation.
3.1 Medium Sized Companies
There are numerous companies which would be in the medium size band
and which have not ascertained whether they would fall within the
mandatory reporting threshold.
Carbon Managers is able to provide suitable workshops,
conduct preliminary phone inquiries and visit companies to provide
information sessions and support services. Clients are welcome to
attend information sessions being made available to wider organisations
through our engagement programs.
Medium sized members, who find themselves requiring compliance, can
be provided with access to our web based NGERs action management tool.
This is a business improvement tool used by our consultants to coach, guide
and help our clients organise and manage the actions required in
the
reporting process, that is, the what, how, why, when and who of actions
such that the reporting is efficient and at minimal cost.
The actions can then be audited and summary documents such as the
strategic plan, business plan, and outstanding actions report etc can
be generated quickly.
The risk profiles on each action gives the CEO feedback at a glance as to where
an action might be falling off the rails. Such action management ensures continuity
of information should key personnel turnover.
An on line training competency based training in sustainability is also available
through our partnership with a certifying training provider. This will ensure that
your industry leaders are brought up to date with the relevant ISO standards
being developed and adopted.
4.1 Small Companies and Subcontractors
Whilst this group may not fall within the thresholds for reporting,
they will, in due course, come under increasing pressure from their head
contractors to demonstrate energy efficiency improvements and more
sustainable practices as these emerge.
Carbon Managers is able to provide a web based Hub, which can be accessed
for information, advice, a pre-qualified supply chain network community, and
details of innovative technologies as these are researched and commercialised.
In this way smaller operators can choose how they might obtain a competitive
edge as a contractor and be brought along into sustainability principles.
